1990 Costa Rica home fotbollströja. Home shirt used in a few friendlies before the start of the Italy World Cup, as well as against Scotland in Costa Rica's first ever World Cup match. It is one of two home shirts used during the tournament (the other one was used against Czechoslovakia on the Round of 16).
Costa Rica was one of the underdogs of the tournament, however with nothing to lose, a squad filled with Primera División players and coached by Yugoslav gaffer Velibor "Bora" Milutinović, La Sele braved in and qualified to the Round of 16 after beating Scotland 1-0 (after Juan Cayasso scored from a Claudio Kara backheel pass) and Sweden 2-1. Costa Rica only lost 1-0 against Brazil in the in-between match on the group stage.
Costa Rica's feat on Italy was the furthest a Central American national team has gone in a World Cup (El Salvador and Honduras, whilst the first Central American national teams to qualify for a World Cup, both fell on the group stage) for twenty-four years--Costa Rica raised their bar on 2014 after making it to the Brazil World Cup quarterfinals after ending on top of said World Cup's group of death (which included former champions Uruguay, Italy and England) and overcoming Greece on the Round of 16 on penalty kicks. La Sele then exited the 2014 World Cup unbeaten as Netherlands saw them out on penalty kicks.
