2022 - 2023 Alajuelense home футболка. Alajuelense home shirt to be used on the 2022-23 season, which was premiered ahead of the club\'s CONCACAF League match against Panamanian Alianza FC (with the visitors being trounced 5-0 and the return leg at Penonomé, Panama being a mere formality).
It is the first home shirt since 1987 that forgoes the club\'s trademark stripes , worn since 1925 intermittently (as Alajuelense has also used halves, hoops, pinstripes and red shirt/black shorts as home kit combinations). Despite the lack of full-length stripes, the chest\'s zigzag pattern is comprised of small stripes.
The club\'s home kit guidelines were established in 1993 (and being effective since 1994) in which the kit compulsorily had to feature stripes but not with a certain length (allowing for the 2015 and 2020 shirts to exist), width (allowing for the 2016 shirt to feature its pinstripes) or quantity. The Club Statutes were updated in 2021 (allegedly having cleared legal hurdles which in part were caused by a now-former club official who neglected them) with the home kit guidelines being lifted as a result; allowing for other combinations to be used while retaining the red and black colors that the club has used since 1925.
Following a short stint with soft drinks brand Tropical (which in itself is a brand of Florida Ice & Farm Co., a Costa Rican company that manufactures both soft and alcoholic drinks) due to them withdrawing from both Alajuelense and Saprissa (as FIFCO was hoping for an amendment on Costa Rica\'s stringent laws regarding alcoholic drinks\' sponsorship for them to use any of their brands; only for Costa Rican Congress not to pass said amendment); phone carrier kölbi returned to the front of the shirt after being on the lower back on the 2021 updated home shirt. The lower back currently remains vacant, and the club\'s Commercial department aims to clear space by gaining sponsors with better payoffs without sacrificing space.
Shirt #10 is assigned to attacking midfielder and current club captain Bryan Ruiz, who is currently on his last semester of his career. Ruiz initially played as a forward and debuted in 2003 on international club duty against Belizean outfit Boca FC and scoring a brace; he did not make his first domestic appearance until a few months later. Ruiz departed Alajuelense in 2006 ahead of the Germany World Cup (which he ended up missing as he did not make the final cut, however he was present at Brazil and Russia) for an extended career abroad, in which he called time in 2020 when he returned to his boyhood club.
Ruiz will be calling time on his career on a protracted manner: while he will finish his club career once Alajuelense concludes competing in 2022, he has repeatedly stated that he will fully retire once Costa Rica exits the upcoming World Cup at Qatar.
