1976 Alajuelense home camisa de futebol. Home shirt as worn during the 1976 season.

Even though home shirts must have red and black stripes according to Alajuelense's standards, there have been cases where red shirts and black shorts have been used as a home kit, the earliest case of this being in the 1940s, where the red home shirt had a black chevron on it (out of which are no known surviving examples).

On the 1950s the red shirt (and black shorts) was adopted as a home shirt due to the shortage of fabric (and the inability of making the red/black striped shirt as a result). Such a practice prevailed until the early 1970s, then it was used on 1976 (like on the above example), 1983, 1987 and 1988 as a home kit. Red was used as an away kit on 1979. Red was used as third choice on 1991 for a single match, and, according to evidence discovered very recently, red was last used as third choice in 1992 for a single match before being revived as a shirt choice on 2012.

The above shirt belonged to versatile midfielder Gerardo "Lalo" Chavarría who retired from the game in 1978. Chavarría has served as part of coaching staff under several managers as late as 2013, when he decided to go on his pension. He nonetheless was given a less taxing desk job.
