Alajuelense then soundly beat Pérez Zeledón on Matchday 22 and relied on the Saprissa-Heredia matchup for a draw that never came. Despite ending on fifth place, Alajuelense was considered a title contender if they managed to qualify for the semifinals.

This shirt was most famously worn on Easter Sunday (1 April 2012) on a 0-2 memorable win against Saprissa before close a packed stadium. Due to Alajuelense's shape as described above, a loss on the Costa Rican Clásico could spell doom for Alajuelense. By Matchday 18 (this match), Saprissa was a title contender, but mostly due to Alajuelense's poor run more than anything--Saprissa also had problems of their own which ended by them being booted out of the finals by Verano runner-up Santos. Alajuelense refused to give up to the pressure caused by 18.000 Saprissa faithful (some 2000 Alajuelense fans were in attendance as well) and claimed an impressive scalp after goals by midfielder Cristopher Meneses and forward Froylán Ledezma.
