Sporting was founded in Portuguese Macau on 22 September 1926 and is the 25th branch of the Lisbon club. As the territory was a Portuguese colony, branches of SL Benfica and FC Porto were also established (the former also playing on the Liga de Elite, whilst the latter competes in the second tier). Sporting has not competed non-stop as the club has been reactivated twice--in 1951 and in 2009, being dormant for more than 15 years before its latest reactivation.

Sporting has only won the Liga de Elite once, in 1991.
