Despite the club having reinforced themselves with former Saprissa players Odir Jacques and Jaime \"Jimmy\" Grant, and still having mainstays from their 1971 league double; Alajuelense ended third on the league table behind runners-up Herediano and eventual champions Saprissa.

Despite the above, Alajuelense did not leave the year empty-handed as they won the (league) Cup unbeaten, which had no final as it was contested on a round-robin format and won by points.

The stripe pattern used by this shirt has proven to be popular amongst the Alajuelense fandom, although this has been more due to the 1985 rehash with the Glidden sponsor--the above shirt being the first one that used it. Alajuelense has also used white striping in their 1992 and 2015 home shirts too (the latter being pinstriping).
