The above example was obtained by Liga Deportiva Alajuelense defender Luis Antonio Marín when Once Caldas (Copa Libertadores champion visited Costa Rica to play against Alajuelense (CONCACAF Champions Cup champion) for the 2004 Copa Taca de Campeones. Alajuelense won 1-0 on home turf against Once Caldas.

This match-up was a homage of sorts to the Interamerican Cup (last contested in 1998) which pitted Copa Libertadores champions (which sometimes declined or refused to play on it, making the runners-up the contestants instead) against the CONCACAF Champions Cup champions. As the Copa Taca was declared unofficial by both confeds, it was only contested in 2004.

Nowadays, it is more likely for CONMEBOL and CONCACAF champions to face each other in the Club World Cup, although such a match-up has to take place yet.
