Mexico defeated Belgium 2-1 with goals from Fernando Quirarte and Hugo Sánchez. The green home shirt was also worn in final group stage match against Iraq resulting in a 1-0 victory with yet another Quirarte goal. The quarterfinal match saw Mexico fall 4-1 in a penalty shoot to West Germany.
