Hougang United Football Club was founded as Marine Castle United Football Club, which was formed by Newcastle United fans in the Marine Parade area.

Looking at the 2016 S.League home shirt, one will notice a banded style that was new to the team’s kit hamper. With official colours being orange and black, kit makers Vonda (a supplier local to Singapore, under the same management as Hougang’s former supplier Waga) decided to take a bit of a gamble by keeping the base of the shirt orange only. Clashing black shades are provided in the form of the chest band that accentuates the logo and wordmark of ESW Manage who enjoyed their second season as chief sponsor.
