1990 Costa Rica retro replicas football shirt. Near-exact replica of the away shirt used by La Sele during the Italy World Cup. The actual shirt has a larger badge and has "Lotto" in writing underneath the Lotto logo.
The above design was picked for the away jersey in homage of Club Sport La Libertad, which was the first football club founded in the country, dating back to 1905. However even to this day some people out of the country think that it was actually because of Juventus, as a wink to Italy and because Costa Rica played one of their matches in Turin. Costa Rica would use white and black in stripes several more times during the decade, and white and black in a "Holstein cow" pattern on 1996 for the France World Cup qualifiers. The stripes were revisited in 2013 during Lotto's second run for a few friendlies post-qualifiers.
Costa Rica would also revisit a homage design in 2006 for the Germany World Cup, this time in blue and white stripes, paying respect to Club Sport Cartaginés which was on their Centenary year, however it was never used on any of the World Cup matches.
La Sele wore the white and black stripes against Brazil (losing one-nil) and against Sweden, achieving qualification to the Round of 16 on the latter match by winning 2-1. Costa Rica then reverted to home colours against Czechoslovakia, losing 4-1.
Shirt #20 was issued to Alajuelense defender Mauricio Montero on his first and only World Cup appearance. Montero was one of four liguistas called by Yugoslav gaffer Velibor Milutinović, the other three being fellow defender Óscar Ramírez, and midfielders José Carlos Chávez and Miguel Davis.
