Alajuelense retro shirt from the club\'s La Liga brand.

The above example is an exact replica of the shirt used by the team during the 1966 season, which was won by Alajuelense after playing the first instance of a Costa Rican final, in this specific case against Saprissa. Alajuelense won the first match on 17 January 1967 by 1-0; days later on the return match they found themselves on a bind when Saprissa broke the 0-0 tie at 84\' from the penalty spot [even though the score was tied, the tiebreaker consisted in better goal average (Saprissa had 2,13, whilst Alajuelense had 2,08) rather than playing a deciding match or extending to extra time, if Saprissa won the second match by one goal they would be crowned champions because of this and because they had head-to-head advantage on all four of the regular league matches played between them; meaning that Alajuelense had to win on aggregate in order to win silverware], however Alajuelense pressed forward and overwhelmed their arch-rivals, trapping them in their own half. By 89\', after a handful of corner kicks which led to nothing, young forward Edgar Núñez equalized and threw Saprissa into disarray. The moral blow caused Saprissa to lose the will to fight back and led to Alajuelense\'s league title.

Alajuelense normally played on their habitual stripes for home matches, however they used the above halved number on night matches, purportedly to display elegance according to older fans. As a result, this may have been one of the first instances where a third shirt was used on Costa Rican football.
