The away shirt is the first one in eighteen years that includes a color other than red, black or white on its design after the first Atlética collection--both the home and away shirts that debuted in mid-1998 after the Nike deal lapsed had gray pinstriping on them. The decision to use gray on the current away shirt proved controversial with some fans due to arch-rivals Deportivo Saprissa implementing non-traditional orange on both the home and away jerseys used between 2005 and 2012 (and such inclusion being derided by their fans and mocked by the opposition).

Alajuela will use the same model during the Invierno 2016 campaign albeit with different sponsorship arrangement--Ibérico decided to withdraw all of their sponsorship agreements (Ibérico also sponsored Saprissa) due to alleged financial difficulties and it will be substituted with Toyota on the front. It is expected that the back sponsorship will be substituted as well.

The above item is a player-issued (due to the Sardimar sponsor not being present in the stadium replicas) and match-worn item obtained from fan favorite midfielder Allen Guevara, who is on his sixth consecutive year wearing red-and-black after being signed from Águilas Guanacastecas (present-day Municipal Liberia) ahead of the Invierno 2010 campaign.
