During this season, Alajuelense had the closest brush with relegation during their lengthy career on Costa Rica top-tier competition (Alajuelense is a founding member of the Liga Nacional de Fútbol [present-day FEDEFUTBOL] and hasn't been relegated since the first league competition took place on 1921).

Alajuelense avoided the drop that season after thrashing relegation "contender" Guanacaste by 6-0 on the penultimate league match played on November 8th, 1978. Alajuelense only needed a tie that night to secure their place, however they delivered the heaviest result of the entire season.
