Red Star came 2nd to rivals Partizan in the First League of FR Yugoslavia, however defeated them in the final of the Yugoslavia Cup. They were beaten by Neuchatel Xamax in the UEFA Cup qualifying round.

The squad included Dejan Stankovic, Bratislav Živković, Goran Drulić, Miodrag Pantelić and Zoran Jovičić.

The shirt is the same design/sponsor as worn in the more-commonly seen 1997/98 shirt except with the historic club emblem.
