1998 Western Mass Pioneers fotbollströja. This is a Western Mass Pioneers jersey.
Founded in 1998, the team was originally called Gremio Lusitano. But, due to a league rule (at the time) prohibiting names of ethnic origin, the name Pioneers was chosen in a public contest and Gremio Lusitano (or Lusitano Stadium) became the name of their stadium. The team first played in what was then called the United States Interregional Soccer League (USISL), but has since evolved into what is now known as the United Soccer Leagues (USL), filling out Div. II, III, and IV of the US soccer pyramid.
The Western Mass Pioneers now play in the Eastern Conference, Northeast Division, of the USL-League Two (USL-2). Which is in the 4th division of the pyramid. As a Semi-pro/Amateur league it cannot be officially sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) without jeopardizing the player’s collegiate qualifications, and so, these teams compete in the US Open Cup under the further umbrella of the Adult Soccer Leagues (ASA).
This shirt is from the USISL days, and as such, can only date to their inaugural year of 1998, the last year before the league rebranded to become the USL.
The flaming ball in the team logo was the original logo of the USISL, and still appears in the Pioneers’ logo to this day.
The Pioneers have qualified for the US Open Cup 11 times. 1998, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018. They’ve made it to the 1st round 4 times, the 2nd round 6 times, and the 3rd round once.
