In the club's early years Monaco became well known for lacking identity and used to change its colours every year. Colours were actually chosen just to be different from other teams and it wasn't until the 1950's that Monaco played in red and white stripes, the first important shirt in club's history. The famous red and white diagonal shirt was designed by Princess Grace Kelly herself in 1960 and would immediately bring luck to the team, winning its first French championship during the 1960-1961 season.
