Shirt of the week for 25/03/17 – a bit of a mess from Chile

This is a bit of a mess, it’s the 2000 away shirt of Chilean Primera Divisio side Club Deportivo Universidad Catolica.

Nicknamed either “Cato” or “Caballeros Cruzados” they play at the 14118 capacity Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo in the capital city of Santiago.

They are one of the most successful and popular Chilean football clubs and considered one of the Chile’s “Big Three” alongside Universidad de Chile and Colo-Colo.

The team is one of the many sports clubs at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, they started around 1910, when students of the University would reunite to play football matches, mostly playing historical rivals Universidad de Chile, the local rival University. The idea of creating a professional club emerged in 1937, and the club officially and legally began.

The best British connection I can find is midfielder Gary Medel who played for Cardiff City in their first ever season in the Premier League (2013-2014), he moved on to Inter and has been there ever since.
