Shirt of the Week, 4th February 2017, Steyning Town FC
I’ve decided to go on a mission to collect a football shirt from every club side in Sussex, the county I live in in the south of England. This is a home shirt of Steyning Town FC, from the Southern Combination Division 1 league. I went to school in Steyning, a long, long time ago!
Known as the Reds or the The Barrowmen, they play at The Shooting Field stadium which had a rather smashing 3G pitch installed over the summer. This allows the club to support 22 teams from 5 years olds, through to U16s, U18s, U21s, Girls, Women’s, Reserves, Vets and of course the First Team.
Currently riding high in the league they aspire to a place in the Isthmian Ryman league, though with this would come the need to finance the playing squad. As a community club everything they earn goes back into the club, this is supplemented by a rather decent club house with a bar serving a full range of beers (including the rather refreshing Estrella Damm), and on match days a barbecue cooks up superb burgers from the very excellent Steyning Butchers.
The Barrowmen have won the Sussex Senior Cup twice, most recently in 1989, and finished top of the Sussex County Football League Division 1 two seasons running between 1984-1986.
With so many fixture changes for football league clubs due to TV I find myself attending local non league games more often these days, and I encourage other to try it too. You get to see committed sides playing the very best they can, fielding the best players they can, and with a minimum of histrionics. On the 3G pitches the game is fast, and more entertaining than you might think. Add to that some great catering, friendly banter and decent prices, it’s a marvellous way to spend your Saturdays at 3pm.
Huge thanks to my old school friend Dee who lives and breathes Steyning Town FC, and Woodie the Club Chairman for letting me have this shirt for my collection.
To view his shirt, and more from the many British leagues take a look here , if you don’t see a shirt of your (Sussex) team why not take some photos and post them, we’d love to see them.
