Shirt of the Week – 14/01/17 – remembering Graham Taylor

Here you go then, this quite stylish and classy number is the home shirt of Watford FC, from the 1986-1987 season, Graham Taylors last season as manager of the Hornets.

He may have been the butt of many jokes, but he did actually do quite well as a manager, especially for Watford, taking them from division 4 in 1977 to division 1 in 1982, he even finished 2nd in the top flight in 1982-1983. Back then that was only good enough for a place in the UEFA Cup.

Watford have played in pretty much every colour under the sun, yellow green and red stripes in the early years, black and white stripes between 1910 and 1923, all blue in the 40s and 50s, before settling on gold as the predominant colour in 1960, with the occasional addition of red and black.

The legendary Luther Blissett holds the all time record for appearances and goals for Watford, playing 503 times and scoring 186 goals. Nowadays, sadly with the revolving door recruitment policy favoured by the Pozza Family, there are few players who have appeared more than 100 times for the current Watford side, Troy Deeney being pretty much the only one.

RIP Graham Taylor.
